Pieter Breugel the Elder - The Harvest of the Hay
The threefold social idea is a perspective on human social life, first outlined by Austrian philosopher Rudolf Steiner in 1918. It describes three realms of society, namely those of rights and politics ; economic life ; and "spiritual cultural life". It also explores characteristic differences and conflicts that arise among these three areas - as well as possibilities for their healthy interaction.
In my experience, study of Rudolf Steiner's social idea has this character, that it is itself a health promoting activity. Reflection on the nature and laws of the three spheres of life, and on their interaction is already a satisfying artistic and imaginative experience. It calls up a robust and positive image of society - of the fullness of human life. This image can be a source of hope, confidence and goodwill in one who envisions it. Lastly the threefold idea serves quite well as a diagnostic tool concerning what goes badly or disharmoniously in society - helping to identify both the "why" of problems that arise, and potential means for their solution.
The articles offered here are the outcome of nearly 40 years study and consideration of Steiner's social idea, and your comments are very much welcome. For further posts in this series, please also join our RSS feed (see right sidebar).
