"The Case Against EMF Protection Products"
Brief background
"EMF" stands for electromagnetic field, a field of electric and magnetic forces that form around a stream of moving electricity. The characteristics and effects of electromagnetic fields depends on their source. The earth has an electromagnetic field - the field in which all life has evolved - and naturally this is supportive and beneficial to living organisms. Electric and electronic devices have their own electromagnetic fields. Along with the many ways these devices serve us, they can also be harmful in different ways to living things
EMF products alone are not enough
EMF exposures in our environment are many, powerful and continuous, and research indicates that their effects are also cumulative. While EMF protection products should be an important part of your EMF protection strategy, to depend on them alone would create a false sense of security. What's needed is not just a single or simple strategy, but a comprehensive one. Our own recommendations concerning EMF are to
MIXED reviews on products we endorse
When we suggest EMF protection products, we know you’ll also want to know what other people think about them. It makes sense to seek opinions of others who may have used a product, and know its good and bad points. But there can also be pitfalls to this
We’ve read reviews of many EMF protection products, and they can be quite harsh. While in most cases well intentioned, these include products that, to our research or experience, are excellent. Here are some critiques we’ve seen – and our responses
Categories of concern
1) “This product is a scam – when I checked it with my EMF detection meters, it showed no change of readings at all !”
This is by far the leading criticism of EMF protection products. But while it may be logical, it misses an important point. Here’s a reply we’ve seen to this concern, that captures the matter exactly :
“Question : Can the effect be tested with EMF meters ?
Answer : No, you cannot test a "before" and "after" measurement on an EMF meter. There is no EMF protection device on the market or in the world that will change, block, or alter electromagnetic fields. If any EMF protection company tells you their device will do this, they are not telling the truth. The only way to block wireless radiation is using very physical, microwave shielding fabric, which is sold in different forms. When it comes to EMF protection technology, the best devices will support the body by reducing the biological stress associated with EMF exposure” (emphasis ours)
None of the products we recommend claim to eliminate EMF – after all, if you eliminate the EMF containing signal of your cell phone, or the WiFi signal of your router, your devices wouldn’t work !
The EMF protection products we recommend superimpose another, protective or supportive force or frequency, on the field generated by your devices. Rather than eliminating that field, they counteract its effects on the body
Vehement as critiques may be that a product fails to improve EMF readings, they’re based on a misunderstanding
2) “Worthless - just a piece of plastic …. metal ….. ceramic etc”
Criticisms like these imply at the same time that a) the product doesn’t do what’s it’s claimed to and b) you’re getting almost nothing for your money. This may discourage you from using perfectly good - and much needed - products
EMF protection products – and any product, technological or otherwise – require large expenditures of time and money, first to develop, and then to bring to market. To expect them to then be sold at the cost of raw materials would be unrealistic
It may help to recall that computer chips – programmed to potentially contain libraries of information – are anything but simple, and certainly not "just a piece of silicon”. Likewise, high tech magnets involve much more than the metals, ceramic, even rubber they're made from : they take time, money and considerable technical expertise and equipment to produce. Plastic - also a seemingly inxpensive substance - is now treated to conduct electricity in various technologies. But to develop, manufacture and bring this substance to market is not inexpensive
To use the characteristics of a natural substance or harness a natural process to beneficial effect, is just good science. This kind of smart thinking like this is at the heart of many technologies. But they're not necessily cheap or simple to produce !
3) “I used it and I didn’t feel anything”
Some people may also report tangible positive effects from the same product. People have varying sensitivities both to harmful and helpful influences. It’s also not strictly necessary to feel immediate effects, in order to be protected by a product. To make the best judgment, it will help to read both positive and critical reviews – and also take into consideration any scientific testing the manufacturer has had done on the product
In the meantime it should be noted that no reputable EMF protection product claims to cure existing illnesses. If someone has ongoing pain or other significant symptoms, they should see an appropriate conventional or complementary/integrative medical practitioner
4) "When I used this product, I felt WORSE"
This is not common, but it can happen. It is not necessarily a sign of danger
It can happen that when any external stressor is removed, internal effects of the stressor continue - or even only emerge for the first time. Examples include :
1 ) When teachers, who meet all challenges and shoulder all burdens of a long school year, arrive at their first week of summer vacation - and promptly get sick !
2) When a racehorse finishes a race, the horse can also fall ill if allowed to rest immediately. Hence the practice of walking a horse after it has run hard
3) The sad experience with concentration camp survivors who, when rescued, promptly perished if immediately provided a full diet and comforts of life
4) The "detox reaction" of people receiving detoxification from heavy metals, if exposures were high and the detox to rapid
Before giving up on an EMF protection product too soon, it might help to use it one or two hours at a time to start, and increase gradually
5) EMF protection products are ALL scams and snake oil - because electric/electronic devices/smart meters/cell phone towers/power lines/5G equipment are all PERFECTLY SAFE
Reviews of this kind tend to be particularly withering, and represent a certain segment of people who are scientifically educated, or work in a technical or science related field. They may reference certain facts or principles of science - not necessarily relevant to that product - with force and conviction ; or note that all products available to the public are fully tested for safety
To these it may be said that there are questions about these tests - that the standards may in fact be set too low ; that crucial research in many areas has simply not been done ; that much scientific research suggests that EMF does do harm ; and that among those concerned about the effects of these devices and of EMF, the leading voices are also in fact scientists

KINDS of EMF Protection Products
EMF protection products we recommend work in several ways :
CHOOSING EMF Protection Products
As noted previously, EMF reaches us from many sources in our environment. It can be be quite strong, and its also being emitted continuously by one source or another around us. Harm from EMF is also known to be cumulative, worsening with continued exposure. Our own practice and attitude has been to mix, match and overlap protections. Since all products we use or recommend have long lasting or permanent effects, the expense is more or less “one time and done”
In selecting EMF products, we don’t recommend that you just trust and go in blind. Instead we encourage you to
Whatever a seller has to say about their product, you’re within your rights to ask : “Is this transparent to me ? Are they just throwing out terminology without explaining it ? Can I understand this well enough from their presentation to make a good decision ?
And of course you can also pose your own Customer Question if you have one
We’ve used a number of EMF products ourselves. This has been our process for evaluating them – and our basis for recommending what you see :

KINDS of EMF Protection Products
EMF protection products we recommend work in several ways :
- By using natural substances, or combinations of substance that reduce or counteract the effects of EMF on the body. Substances are chosen for known protective and supportive effects on human cells and tissues. When placed in the midst of the EMF an electric or electronic device generates, they effectively counteract it, and reduce the biological stress it would otherwise cause. These products work especially well for devices used in close proximity to the body. They may have the extra benefit of being inexpensive. Our own product, The Harmonic Shield, is in this category
- By holding or carrying an electromagnetic frequency beneficial and compatible to the body – a frequency that’s also stronger in its effects than EMF emitted by electric/electronic devices in the same environment. An example would be a product programmed to replicate Schumann’s Resonance – the electromagnetic frequency of the earth. These products offer protection from some of the stronger EMF souces in a surrounding environment – smart meters, nearby power lines and power stations, cell phone towers and 5G equipment/networks.They also offer protection for larger areas - for a whole room, whole house or floor of a high rise building
- By blocking EMF from reaching the body. In particular this includes EMF protection clothing that blocks EMF from reaching a particular part of the body – head, chest, abdomen etc
Instead we encourage you to
- Read the product listing thoroughly
- Look at the “Answered Customer Questions” and see how the seller handles him or herself
- Read the customers reviews carefully. Read the positive and negative ones - say, the first ten of each. Is a review written by someone who’s made a Verified Purchase ? What is the person’s actual experience of the product. Also, especially in the case of a negative review, how does the seller respond to criticism with a Comment, if they make one ?
Whatever a seller has to say about their product, you’re within your rights to ask : “Is this transparent to me ? Are they just throwing out terminology without explaining it ? Can I understand this well enough from their presentation to make a good decision ?
And of course you can also pose your own Customer Question if you have one
